Animal farm is an allegorical novella by george orwell first published in england on 17 august 1945. Edward young created the now iconic and increasingly oft applied cover in 1935 but it was bauhahus typographer jan tschichold who refined it in 1948 after becoming penguin s head of typography and production in the late forties. The book tells the story of a group of farm animals who rebel against their human farmer hoping to create a society where the animals can be equal free and happy.
